Allister disgust at Gildernew's Forkhill comments

08 April 2008

Jim Allister QC MEP has hit out at comments made by DARD Minister Michelle Gildernew in relation to the proposed re-development of the former army base at Forkhill.

In a DARD Ministerial Press Release, Michelle Gildernew said,
“Forkhill has suffered because of the major military base strategically placed in the centre of the village which has impacted greatly on every aspect of local life during the last number of years”.

In response, the Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister said,
“I utterly reject the comments made by Michelle Gildernew, that the existence of the army base in Forkhill caused much suffering to the area. Let us be clear, it was the large presence of active IRA terrorists in the area which necessitated the need for an army barracks to be situated at Forkhill for the protection of all law abiding citizens.”

“This latest utterance is a prime example of why Sinn Fein are so clearly not fit to hold the offices of Government. Clearly, they still condone the murder and maiming of thousands of armed forces personnel and civilians alike as a result of the IRA’s protracted campaign. What is more, Gildernew’s efforts vis-à-vis Forkhill is an example of Sinn Fein exerting its Ministerial powers to achieve political ends.”

“TUV will not stand by while Sinn Fein attempts to re-write history at every opportunity.”
