Sinn Fein Trounced in Europe

10 May 2005

DUP MEP Jim Allister today issued the following statement:

"I greatly welcome the scale of the defeat of Sinn Fein in The European Parliament today.

They tried through their hard left group to water down the McCartney resolution but failed miserably with only 28 voting to remove the call on Sinn Fein to insist that witnesses co-operate directly with the PSNI and 578 voting in favour of the demand.

On the final vote Sinn Fein found itself utterly isolated with only 4 votes against the resolution condemning the IRA's criminality and demanding the bringing to justice of the murderers of Robert McCartney, and 555 votes in favour.

This debate and outcome happily exposes Sinn Fein as being without friends in Europe.  Their attachment to criminality and equivocation over murder has brought them to where they should be - utterly rejected and despised."
