Where were the DUP MPs?

06 March 2008

Statement by Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister:-

"Given its vital constitutional importance, I am greatly disappointed that the MPs for North Antrim, Lagan Valley and Strangford did not trouble to go and vote in favour of a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty in the House of Commons last night.

The Lisbon Treaty is going to strip away further national powers to Brussels, something the British people do not want and yet, shamefully, when there was an opportunity to demand the people be consulted, Iris Robinson, Jeffrey Donaldson and Ian Paisley were absent. Why? Indeed the poor level of involvement by Northern Ireland MPs, who are also MLAs, in the crucial debates on the Lisbon Treaty over recent weeks, is confirmation in itself of the damage being inflicted on Ulster representation by dual mandates."
