Republican weapons still on the streets - Allister

25 February 2008

Responding to an article published in The Sunday Tribune, Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister said:

"The revelation that a volley of shots was fired by several gunmen beside the IRA garden of remembrance on the Falls Road where the ashes of convicted terrorist Brendan Hughes were being scattered raises serious questions.

Senior members of Sinn Fein – including Gerry Adams – attended the funeral on Tuesday of last week and several representatives of the party such as their head of operations in Belfast (Bobby Storey) were present when the shots were fired. Indeed Storey is reported as having organised the ceremony.

Where was the statement of condemnation of this incident from Republicans? Have people like Storey reported what they saw to the police? And where did these weapons come from? After all, haven’t we been told that the IRA has decommissioned all their weapons?

Once again, Sinn Fein/IRA has shown us that they remain wedded to paramilitarism  and are totally unfit to hold office in this Province. What will it take for Unionists at Stormont to accept this reality?"
