Dormant Cash could fund Energy Project

23 January 2008

Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister, has said some of the windfall funds Northern Ireland is to receive in 2009 from UK dormant accounts could go to Rose Energy, an off-farm solution for poultry litter.

Mr Allister said,
“Several weeks ago, I wrote to the Finance Minister enquiring how much Northern Ireland could expect to gain under legislation currently going through Parliament to make available money lying in dormant bank accounts. In his reply, Peter Robinson estimates that Northern Ireland stands to gain tens of millions of Pounds in 2009, with funds to be earmarked for signature projects which meet ‘social’ or ‘environmental’ purposes.”

“An off-farm solution for poultry litter would, in my view be a very worthwhile environmental project within the set criteria. Utilising dormant funds would go some way towards meeting the current Rose Energy funding gap on the part of Government, and in securing the future sustainability of the poultry sector.”
