"Wipe the smile off the Chuckle Brothers" - Allister

28 January 2008

Speaking while campaigning for Keith Harbinson in the Dromore by-election, Traditional Unionist MEP Jim Allister said:-

“This by-election affords a timely opportunity for Unionists to give their verdict on what has been done in their name at Stormont: unrepentant terrorists at the heart of government, the IRA’s evil Army Council still in operation, Sinn Fein’s military wing still carrying out such crimes as the murder of Paul Quinn, and all the while Ian Paisley chuckles away with Martin McGuinness.

Across the Province, Unionists who feel let down by the spectacle at Stormont are willing the people of Dromore and district to vote in their name against what is going on.

This by-election is an opportunity for the Unionist electorate to wipe the smile off the Chuckle Brothers. I encourage all concerned Unionists to do so.

It is also a chance to deliver a strong message on the nearby Maze Stadium project. No sports stadium should be tainted by terrorist association. Yet, this is precisely what is intended at the Maze. The answer is to delist the ugly prison buildings and then demolish them – “raze the maze”. Unfortunately, the DUP Environment Minister has rejected delisting, so, we still face glorification of terrorism on the Maze site. This is intolerable. Voters in this by-election can send a clear message of rejection of a terror dome at the Maze.

I am delighted that in our first electoral contest we can offer a candidate of the calibre and ability of local solicitor, Keith Harbinson. Keith stands head and shoulders above other candidates in terms of ability, and gives the electorate the opportunity of first class representation on Banbridge Council.”
