Allister comments on McAliskey decision

23 November 2007

Statement by Jim Allister QC MEP:

“Today’s politically convenient judicial decision in the Roisin McAliskey case is a significant setback for the European Arrest Warrant system.

At a time when the EU has been getting its act together on anti-terrorism measures, it is highly regrettable that from a decision in the UK comes a rebuff. No doubt this retrograde decision will be latched onto by others resisting extradition throughout Europe.

I trust, therefore, that without regard to the political implications, the authorities will give due consideration to appealing this Recorder’s Court decision.”
