IRA getting away with murder

22 November 2007

Statement by Jim Allister MEP:

The recent launch of Walls of Silence, the McCartney sisters’ account of the events surrounding their brother's brutal murder and the subsequent cover-up by Sinn Fein/IRA, illustrates that Republican “support” for the rule of law is a sham.

The McCartneys tell us that the only difference between pre and post Sinn Fein taking the much talked about “pledge” for support to the PSNI is that the number of people willing to turn a blind eye to murder has increased - a sad indictment of the political parties in Northern Ireland.

While we have words from Sinn Fein about cooperating in relation to “civic policing” (whatever that is) they display a continuing willingness to frustrate the due process of law when one of their own is implicated in the most dreadful of crimes. As long as the McCarney sisters can say that Sinn Fein/IRA failed to deliver on the promises they made to the family the Republican movement can in no way be said to be in support of the rule of law.

Far from the political parties in Northern Ireland unanimously being in support of law and order, the fundamentals have been corrupted as crimes disadvantageous to the political process are swept under the carpet. As events unfold we will witness the Quinn murder passing into the same category as that of Robert McCartney - subservient to the survival of the political process and thus something to be marginalised and ignored, sadly, even by the unionist political elite!"
