MEP to host FAIR - Frattini meeting

20 November 2007

Statement by Jim Allister MEP:

"Tomorrow in Brussels I am hosting a meeting between the victims' group FAIR and EU Commissioner Frattini.

Commissioner Frattini has responsibility for Human Rights issues and Terrorism issues.  Since FAIR secured a direct grant from his department to promote the interests of victims of terrorism, I am pleased that the Commissioner has agreed to a meeting to hear of FAIR's work and the needs of victims generally. It is important that in shaping its anti-terrorism policy the EU is kept in touch with the long-term legacy left by gruesome terror, such as we suffered in Northern Ireland.

Since the EU opposes state-sponsored terrorism I expect FAIR will also brief the Commissioner on its litigation against Libya, a country which now stands to benefit from the EU's Neighbourhood Policy towards the Mediterranean area.
