Allister presses for Haddock Quota Increase

01 November 2007

Jim Allister QC MEP has written to EU Fisheries Commissioner, Joe Borg urging the Commission to bring forward proposals to substantially increase Irish Sea Haddock quotas for 2008.

The Ulster MEP said,
“Last December, Irish Sea Haddock quota was cut by 8%, despite the insistence by fishermen that, far from declining, Haddock stocks were increasing. It would seem Haddock stocks are in abundant supply, and that is why I have asked the Commission to reflect reality as new quotas are set in December”.

“I am fearful the Commission intends to approach this issue with its infamous attitude of intransigence, regardless of the impact this might have on the Northern Ireland fishing industry.”
