Executive chaos
19 October 2007
Statement by Jim Allister MEP on recent political events:
“From the heady promises of unified, transparent government, serving the interests of all, we have soon descended into factional Executive infighting, where the interests of the DUP/Sinn Fein Coalition are paramount. Little wonder, because an Executive based on the absurdity of mandatory coalition can never have the essential collectivity capable of providing good government.
This past week has been an eye-opener for many. First, we had Peter Robinson’s bad-tempered dance on top of a procedural pin, leading to a gang-up on a Minister doing the right thing. Now, we have a Minister alleging sharp practice within the Executive. What a spectacle!
For my part, I have no doubt that few believe it is right that any paramilitary organisation should get taxpayer’s money under any guise, and , therefore, there is widespread support for Margaret Ritchie and dismay in respect of those that are trying to thwart her.”
