Allister concerned at Sinn Fein polling station behaviour in Omagh

24 June 2004

Democratic Unionist Party MEP, Jim Allister QC, has written to the Chief Electoral officer, Mr Dennis Stanley, asking him to investigate reports of synchronised moves in at least two Omagh polling stations during the European election, where Sinn Fein polling agents attempted to remove marked electoral registers at 8.30pm.

Mr Allister said, “It would seem that this was a well planned manoeuvre by Sinn Fein.  The election rules are quite clear that polling agents can sit inside polling stations and mark registers but they cannot leave the room with the register.  We have come to expect Sinn Fein trying every trick in the book and these reports merely confirm that they will go to any length to gain an advantage.  I call upon the Chief Electoral Officer to thoroughly investigate this matter.  Mr Stanley needs to find out exactly how widespread this activity was and make plans to ensure that such attempts at perverting democracy are not permitted again.  The fact that police were absent from many polling stations across the country puts election staff in a vulnerable position on occasions such as this.

Sinn Fein are never done telling us that they are democrats.  Their behaviour in Omagh on June 10th shows how far they have yet to travel before we can call them democrats”.
