Allister answers Robinson Telegraph article
24 August 2007
Statement by Jim Allister MEP:
"Peter Robinson's comments are really a dusted down copy of the type of empty rhetoric which David Trimble used to indulge in as he attempted to divert attention from his broken election pledges and flawed Belfast Agreement. He too used to tell us there was no alternative and doom awaited us if we didn't embrace IRA/Sinn Fein in government. Now, one of his greatest critics of the time is performing the same role and speaking the same language, as he tries to still mounting internal unease.
Far from forcing the further delivery by republicans, promised 5 times in the DUP manifesto, or securing genuine support for the rule of law, we have the obscenity of Sinn Fein clinging to an illegal Army Council, parading the streets of Belfast with replica rifles and cherry-picking on policing to condemn lawful arrests on terrorist charges. In the rarified "laugh a minute" camaraderie of Stormont these matters might seem unimportant, but to grassroots unionists they still matter a great deal.
The fundamental flaws still exist and will persist, because vested interest will see to it: the absurdity of all parties for all time in government, with no opposition; the unworkability of the joint office of OFMDFM; andthe cancer at the heart of government of unrepentant terrorists."
