Allister slams Sinn Fein coat-trailing
11 August 2007
Statement by Jim Allister MEP:
"This weekend’s coat-trailing march by Sinn Fein in Belfast and Adams’ recent demands on dealing with the past, illustrate both the unyielding and unrepentant attachment of Sinn Fein to a bloodied past and their selectivity in seeking “justice”.
It really is so much cant and hypocrisy for Adams to demand a truth commission mechanism when he himself continues to deny his own IRA involvement. If Sinn Fein want to begin to be taken seriously on this issue, then let Adams and McGuinness lead by example and come clean on their personal contribution to the savagery and mayhem of their IRA’s terror campaign.
Of course, Sinn Fein has no more interest in the truth than they have in promoting Northern Ireland as an integral part of the UK. As ever, they see a “truth commission” as a vehicle to be hijacked into vilifying British involvement and glorifying their terrorism. Just like they demand amnesty for “on the runs” while insisting on the full rigour of the law against police and soldiers whom they vilify as criminals, so they want to rake over the past on their terms in pursuit of Provo revisionism. It must not be allowed to happen. The best and proper way forward is for all past crimes to be rigorously pursued and those responsible, even if some have come to political prominence, brought to meaningful justice."
