Allister backs Protected Status for Northern Ireland Beef and Lamb

05 July 2007

Jim Allister MEP has given his backing to an application to register Northern Ireland Beef and Lamb as a protected geographical indication, under the EU Protected Food Name Scheme.

PGI status would give recognition to the unique context in which Northern Ireland beef and lamb is produced. A specification outlining production standards, including exacting standards of animal welfare and consumer safety has been compiled as part of the application process, and this is currently out for consultation.

Mr Allister said,
‘I welcome this initiative from the Northern Ireland red meat industry to have the unique production standards of Northern Ireland Beef and Lamb officially accredited by seeking PGI status. I have written to DARD offering my full support for the PGI application to be submitted to the European Commission.’

‘If the application is successful, I would hope PGI status will enable Northern Ireland beef and lamb to be marketed more vigorously, paving the way for higher returns for local producers’ considerable efforts.’

Mr Allister concluded by saying,
‘On 16th and 17th July, a delegation of farmers from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland will make the case for a total ban of Brazilian beef imports to the European Parliament Agriculture Committee. Only a complete ban can restore equity for Northern Ireland farmers who are producing beef to the highest European standards, yet are being undercut by imports which are often falling short of even the most basic standards of consumer safety.’
