Act against Sinn Fein urges Allister

16 April 2004

Democratic Unionist Party European election candidate, Jim Allister QC, has urged the British Government to take action against Sinn Fein/IRA.

Addressing a meeting of the South Antrim Association of the DUP in Antrim, Jim Allister said, “As we await the publication of the Independent Monitoring commission’s report into the attempted abduction of Bobby Tohill, it is obvious as to what its conclusions ought to be.

The Chief Constable has declared his view that the abduction was the workings of the IRA.  The Secretary of State too has already told us that the Tohill affair represented a serious breach of paragraph 13 of the joint Declaration.  Sinn Fein/IRA have been caught red handed.  As we all knew already, they are embroiled in all manner of paramilitarism and criminality.

Regardless of whether or not the Tohill abduction was given the thumbs up by the IRA leadership or not, it was quite clearly a Provisional IRA operation.  Unless we are to continue down the ridiculous Mo Mowlam route of turning a blind eye to so-called “internal housekeeping”, then action must be taken against the IRA and their political representatives in Sinn Fein.

We don’t want to hear the Government come off with the excuse that no mechanism exists to exclude Sinn Fein/IRA from the talks process.”
