MEP comments on German Chancellor's Plan for Europe
17 January 2007
Commenting on the speech to the European Parliament today of Mrs Merkel, upon taking up office as President of the Council of Europe, DUP MEP Jim Allister said:
"The upcoming German attempt to revive the EU Constitution and to try and do so in such a way as to avoid referendums in the key Member States, is not just an insult to the French and the Dutch, it is actually EU arrogance at its worst, where the political elite never take no for an answer!
Mrs Merkel talked at great length about freedom. So it is vital that we allow the peoples of Europe to have the freedom to determine their own futures in free and fair referendums, and not to have this Constitution foisted upon them."
