Victims groups should apply directly to Brussels for funding

02 August 2006

Jim Allister MEP has called on victims group to apply directly to Europe for funding from the EU support programme for victims of terrorism.  Jim Allister believes that victims groups are more likely to receive funding directly from Europe rather than trying to receive funding from Measure 2.4 of the Peace II extension programme which is being delivered by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland.

“I would encourage groups working for the Northern Ireland victims sector to apply directly to Europe for funding for the support programme for victims of terrorism.  I believe that victims groups are more likely to receive funding directly from Europe than by applying to Measure 2.4 of the Peace II extension delivered by the CFNI.  I have no confidence in the CFNI and believe that the peace programme has yet again failed the victims sector.

“Last year SAVER NAVER, a victims group based in Markethill, successfully applied and received funding from the EU programme for victims of terrorism.  SAVER NAVER has used the European funding to help victims in the Armagh area and have recently published a book entitled, ‘A Legacy of Tears’.

Applications to the European programme can be submitted up until the 5 September.  The programme is designed to aid victims of terrorism and mobilising the public against terrorism.
