Departure of Rooker will be no loss to Northern Ireland

09 May 2006

DUP MEP, Jim Allister, has welcomed the departure of Lord Rooker as the latest change within the Northern Ireland Ministerial team.

“Judged on his record he was a failure. Lord Rooker's distinguished himself by refusing to fight Northern Ireland's corner when he was most needed.  His appalling absence from the Fish Quota negotiations in Brussels last December typified his commitment on behalf of the vital sectors for which he had responsibility.

I welcome David Cairns into his new role and hope that he will work for the benefit of Northern Ireland.  When Lord Rooker came to Northern Ireland he promised great things and delivered little.  I hope that while David Cairns has responsibility for Northern Ireland Departments he will work for Northern Ireland and fulfil the responsibilities for which he is being paid.
