Allister attacks Dublin meddling

20 March 2006

"Over the weekend we’ve had both the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the Republic of Ireland, the Ahern double act, pontificate on the future internal governance of part of the United Kingdom.  I call on the Secretary of State to remind these foreign meddlers that Strand One issues are a matter exclusively for the UK Government and the Northern Ireland Parties.

As for Dermot Ahern’s veiled threat of joint authority, hasn’t he heard of the principle of consent?  Is it again the Dublin view that they, not we the people of Northern Ireland, should shape our future? It seems Articles 2 and 3 yet live on in the heart and mind of Dermot Ahern. If we had a Secretary of State worthy of the name, he’d put him in his place."
