British taxpayers expected to foot the bill for Euro-propaganda

20 February 2006

DUP Member of the European Parliament, James H Allister QC MEP has condemned the recent announcement made by the European Commission that as part of its communications strategy that it will be establishing its own broadcasting service, which if approved by the Parliament will pump pro-Euro propaganda into peoples homes on a daily basis. In late January 2006, the Commissioner for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy, Margot Wallstrom published the “White Paper on a European Communication Policy”. Speaking at the launch of the paper, the Commissioner announced the formation of a new “Europe by Satellite” broadcasting service which according to the Commissioner will exist “to boost support for the European Project”.  Speaking today the DUP MEP said,

“Many people will be astonished to learn that the commission plans to establish its own TV channel with the sole purpose of pumping pro-federalist propaganda into the homes of everyone who resides within the European Union. This development has a streak of authoritarianism about it – are the commission so terrified of genuine debate and freedom of discussion that they have to resort to propaganda tactics such as this?

In recent months the pro-federalist movement has been dealt a number of blows – the voters of France and The Netherlands having rejected the draft constitutional treaty, and opinion polls consistently showing high level of antagonism towards further integration across all of Europe into a conglomerated super-state, but it is clear that those at the head of the European project have not given up in their aims. Through initiatives such as this it clear that they hope to grind the voters into submission and accept a unitary European State.

If and when this white paper is turned into a bill for consideration by the parliament, I will be fighting vigorously against it. People are disillusioned with the EU because they see it as failing corrupt and inefficient. It is not people’s minds that need changing through commission-sponsored brainwashing, but rather the structures of the European Union that need root and branch reform.”
