Allister presses Commission on rural Postal Services

17 January 2006

During Question Time in the European Parliament, DUP MEP Jim Allister pressed Commissioner McCreevy on his approach to the deregulation of postal services in the EU, in view of the policy being developed by the Commission on the subject.  Mr Allister urged the Commission not to put in place a system which would bestow a second class service on rural communities and encouraged him to take steps to safeguard against private entrepreneurs creaming off the easy and profitable aspects of postal services, but leaving rural residents as the poor relations.

In response Commissioner McCreevy said that he was personally mindful of the needs of rural communities but the Commission policy had yet to take definitive shape.
