Allister raises religious persecution in Turkey

04 November 2005

DUP MEP Jim Allister regularly pursues, through the EU, grievances concerning persecutions of Christians and other minority groups in many areas of the world.  Attached is a recent Parliamentary question and answer on the persecution of Protestants in Turkey.

Commenting, Mr Allister said:-

"With Turkey hoping to join the EU, it is particularly disconcerting that widespread denial of human rights and freedom of conscience and worship continue in that country.  It seems to me that the Turkish Government has in fact been dragging its feet on these important matters and persists with the confiscation of property belonging to non-Moslem religious foundations and with failing to afford basic religious freedoms to non-Moslems.  I will continue to try and keep the pressure on such issues in the hope of bettering the conditions of religious minorities in that country."
