Not even a whimper a day as DUP elect Speaker in Waiting who says Jean McConville's murder was not a crime

15 April 2013

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister:

“The party, DUP, which once promised ‘a battle a day’ with IRA/Sinn Fein, today demonstrated how far they have crumbled; now, it is ‘whatever Sinn Fein wants Sinn Fein gets’.

“Though proceedings in the Assembly started with the DUP demanding answers from Mitchell McLaughlin over where he stood on the Belfast Telegraph poll showing substantial Sinn Fein support for ‘dissidents’, they simply rolled over to flim-flam answers and then proceeded to vote to elevate him as Principal Deputy Speaker and effectively Speaker in Waiting.

“This is the man who infamously proclaimed on RTE (Jan 2005) that the heinous and wicked murder of Jean McConville was not a crime! On 16 April 2012 in the Assembly he refused to resile from that position. Yet, today he is suitable in the DUP’s eyes to be promoted to Principal Deputy Speaker.

“I’m glad I had the opportunity to speak out against and vote against such a shameful travesty.”
