Stormont Refuses Discussion of Double Standards on Bail

05 March 2013

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:

“Yesterday I attempted to raise the perverse refual of bail to William Frazer – a man with a clean record – and the outrageous bail conditions imposed upon Jim Dowson’s family which required anyone living with him to hand over any communication devices they possess.

“There is understandable and growing anger within the Unionist community at the double standards which people see when those accused of terrorist offences are granted bail while a victims campaigner is remanded in custody. I know from correspondence which I have received and phone calls which have come into my office that these are topics of grave concern to very many people.

“Yet Stormont has decreed that such matters cannot even be discussed in the Assembly!

“Joint First Minister Robinson made great play of how the Unionist Forum was going to reconnect with the people yet I am prevented from raising the one issue of greatest concern to them at this time! It is hard to believe that there could be a greater disconnect between ordinary Unionists and elected representatives.”
