Outrage at £50,000 Bloody Sunday Payment

14 February 2013

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:

“Many innocent victims of Republican violence, who received next to nothing either in monetary compensation or recognition, will be further demeaned and traumatised by today’s news of a £50,000 handout to all affected by 'Bloody Sunday'.

“There were few generous payouts for the victims of Bloody Friday, La Mon, Enniskillen or any of the countless other acts of IRA terrorism, and certainly no sign of justice on the horizon. Rather those who suffered are insulted daily as those who continue to justify those acts of terror are treated as statesmen.

“After the millions already spent on inquires and investigations into 'Bloody Sunday', this is another handout from the British taxpayer.

“A multitude of victims have never had a single penny spent on any inquiry investigating the murder of their loved ones much less a cheque for £50,000.

“Yet even this news will not satisfy the insatiable demands of Republicans with one solicitor for the families already quoted as calling the payment “derisory”. As far as Bloody Sunday is concerned it seems nothing will ever be enough.

“This news will do nothing to calm the situation and will feed the growing realisation in the Unionist community that the so-called “peace process” is a one-way street of concessions to Republicans.” back to list
