Ombudsman Announcement Another Sop to Sinn Fein

23 January 2013

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:

“Today’s announcement by the Police Ombudsman that investigations are to resume into alleged misconduct by RUC officers will be seen by many as yet another sop to Sinn Fein/IRA.

"The numerous and expensive inquiries into Bloody Sunday, Pat Finucane etc are in stark contrast to the dearth of investigations into the murderous activities of the IRA and the involvement of people like McGuinness and Adams. They seem to be the untouchables, while it is open season on the RUC in particular.

“If a small fraction of the time spent investigating alleged misconduct by the security forces were devoted to investigating the 2,000 murders carried out by the Provisionals and justice was done I have no doubt that many senior Republicans would never see the outside of a prison again.

“One of the complaints which I hear time and time again is where are the inquires into Enniskillen, Bloody Friday, Teebane and an endless list of Republican atrocities. The sad truth is that by deeming them fit for government some Unionists have, in effect, given IRA terrorists a de facto amnesty meaning that while the RUC and Army can be investigated for every alleged misdeed Republicans can, quite literally, get away with murder.”
