Maze Shrine Will Promote IRA Terrorism Globally

11 September 2012

Reacting to comments by the chairman of the Maze Development Corporation TUV leader Jim Allister said:

“Mr Brannigan’s remarks have to be seen in the context of what Sinn Fein/IRA and DUP representatives have said about the Maze in the past.

“Nigel Dodds warned “However it is dressed up, whatever spin is deployed, the preservation of a section of the H-Blocks — including the hospital wing — would become a shrine to the terrorists who committed suicide in the Maze in the 1980s. That would be obnoxious to the vast majority of people and is something unionist people cannot accept.”

“Similarly, Sinn Fein have been quite open about their plans for the Maze. Former IRA prison leader Raymond McCartney has boasted that the “listed and retained buildings…will be open to the public. There will be the opportunity for the many stories of the gaol to be told.”

“I have, therefore, no doubt that the plans for the Maze are designed to make it iconic and a world first. But the sad truth is that the Maze will promote to the world a distorted view of Northern Ireland’s history which glorifies the terrorists who were confined within its walls.

“If the Maze project really was about the future and not the past as Mr Brannigan claims why are the H-Blocks being preserved? Was McCartney wrong when he boasted that the buildings which imprisoned sectarian killers would be open to the public? If it really is about the future and not glorifying the IRA’s bloody past why isn’t the so-called “Conflict Transformation Centre” being built on a site which doesn’t carry the terrorist baggage associated with the Maze?

“Let’s have no more of the dressing up or spin Nigel Dodds warned about but some honesty!”
