Stormont Sweeps Sinn Fein's Discrimination Under the Carpet

25 June 2012

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:

“Last week’s findings of religious discrimination by the Industrial Tribunal in Lennon-v-DRD exposed a Sinn Fein/IRA Minister as a practitioner of brazen sectarian discrimination and Republicans as supremely unfit for government.

“On Thursday I issued a statement saying that the issue cannot be allowed to die. Yet it is evident that the powers that be at Stormont are intent on doing all in their power to kill the issue off.

While the Speaker has today accepted urgent oral questions relating to the Ulster Bank and the issues surrounding X-Rays at the Royal my urgent oral asking the First Ministers what the implications for the effectiveness of the ministerial code of the Lennon-v-DRD judgment has not been accepted. Additionally, the Speaker refused to accept a Matter of the Day on the issue.

“My attempt to raise a point of order about the issue was also clamped down on by the Speaker.

“Obviously Stormont is intent on sweeping this issue under the carpet. It is extremely disappointing that such an important issue which raises profound questions about discrimination at ministerial cannot be raised on the floor of the Assembly.”
