25% failure rate in job promotion by Invest NI

27 March 2012

TUV Leader Jim Allister has expressed disappointment that only 75% of jobs which Invest NI claims to have 'promoted' only ever actually materialised as real jobs, according to the NI Audit Office report published today.

"I have long been challenging the DETI Minister to reveal how many of the jobs claimed as promoted by Invest NI actually exist. Today's report goes some way to answering that question by suggesting only 75% ever materialise. The report does not tell us anything about how many of them last, which is another key issue.

"Considering that the Minister and Invest NI insist on setting their targets in the euphemistic parlance of jobs 'promoted', it is progress to now know that 'promoted' is very different from the creation of lasting jobs. A 25% failure rate on delivery is not impressive and re-opens the question of why the Minister thought it appropriate to award the Chief Executive of invest NI a £36,000 bonus - last year, given the controversy, it was said he had not drawn it down - is this still the position?"
