Allister slams UUP as anti-farming hypocrites

26 July 2005

DUP MEP Jim Allister has criticised Lady Hermon, MP from the UUP, for requesting the release of CAP subsidy payments on the top 250 recipients within Northern Ireland.  Mr Allister is in no doubt that this led to DARD releasing CAP subsidy payments for all farmers within Northern Ireland.

Jim Allister commented, “I find it difficult to understand why Lady Hermon wants to undermine the whole of the farming community within Northern Ireland by the release of this information.  Not only does this totally distort the true reflection about farm incomes and breach confidentiality, it is causing security concerns for many rural dwellers.

“When the information was released last month, leading members of the UUP, including their own MEP, branded the action by DARD as ‘a blatant breach of confidentiality’. They also correctly stated that it would fuel the nonsensical notion peddled by some in the media and press that farmers are getting money for nothing.  It now transpires that the UUP was to blame all along.

“By asking for this information, Lady Hermon has done a great disservice for all in the farming community within Northern Ireland.  At the very least, she should now apologise for the damage that she has caused.”
