Allister Backs McCabe Family

20 October 2011

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:

“The very simple and dignified comments of the McCabe family on McGuinness’s bid for the presidency of the Republic should be reflected upon by all those who currently partner him in government. The basic question of how the rule of law will prevail under McGuinness if he will not assist the authorities in investigating the murders of police officers is relevant not just to the Southern election but to Stormont.

“During a debate in Stormont last week I made the simple point that rewarding the terrorists of Sinn Fein/IRA with the highest offices in the land will merely serve to breed more terrorism. Some on the DUP benches, particularly my North Antrim colleague David McIlveen, claimed to be “struggling to get their heads around that argument.” One wonders if they would say the same to the McCabe family.

“McGuinness’s claim that he had “never and would never stand over attacks” on the Southern defence forces and Garda is nonsense which doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. Following the convictions of those responsible for the killing McGuinness said: “Those people qualify under the Good Friday Agreement and there’s no question about that”.

“But if McGuinness’s position has now changed and he does believe the killing of police officers in the South was wrong would he say the same about the hundreds of RUC officers butchered by his IRA?” back to list
