Allister Highlights GAA Terror Fest Weekend

11 August 2011

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister:

“Over the last few days “peace process” sycophants have sought to draw parallels between the attendance of Culture Minister Carol Cullen at Winsor Park – even though she arrived so late and left so early that she missed all four of Northern Ireland’s goals – and the attendance of Edwin Poots at a GAA match some years ago.

“However, this weekend will demonstrate the folly of trying to draw parallels between the Irish Football Association and the GAA. Tomorrow afternoon young Republicans will arrive at Shane O'Neills GAA club, Camlough, where they will camp for the weekend’s terror fest. One of the first events will be a “discussion and debate on the Legacy of the Hunger Strike” which will be followed by a function in the GAA club.

“This Saturday will be jam packed with such delights as a Hunger Strike Exhibition, a talk with Laurence McKeown – a  man sentenced to life imprisonment for causing explosions and attempted murder – and a discussion on the Basque country, again all at Shane O’Neill’s GAA club.

“One wonders if they will find time on their bus tour of South Armagh to visit Kingsmill or other sites associated with Republican heroism!

“This event – coming as it does just a few days after I highlighted the abuse of a cancer charity by Republicans at an event hosted at another GAA club – reminds us of another and persistent face of the GAA. It remains a deeply sectarian organisation willing to facilitate the celebration and glorification of terrorism.”
