PM challenged on when he will export basic tenets of democracy to NI

10 June 2011

Speaking after meeting the Prime Minister, TUV Leader Jim Allister said:-

"The PM having talked about 'the respect agenda' within the devolutionary framework, I took the opportunity of raising with him the issue I would have raised if Questions had been permitted in the Assembly, namely, "When would respect be shown for the basic tenets of democracy in Northern Ireland, in particular, the people being permitted in elections to change their government and even to have an opposition?"

"I suggested to the PM that for him, as an international salesman for these basic tenets across the world, it should be embarrassing that in this part of his and our United kingdom these rights were denied.

"At least the PM left Stormont in no doubt that the present failed arrangements must change."
