Allister comments on Speaker's ruling permitting Provo lingo

01 June 2011

TUV Leader Jim Allister has said he is disappointed but not surprised that the Speaker has refused to deliver parity of esteem for the official name of Northern Ireland, though he requires deference to the title ‘Sinn Fein’.

In a statement Mr Allister said:-

“Though he holds office by the grace and favour of IRA/Sinn Fein, it is disappointing that the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly should acquiesce in their vocabulary, which, for them, is designed to denigrate Northern Ireland. Even the absurdity of the stance now adopted did not deter this ruling: MLAs must show deference to the name of Sinn Fein, while they do despite to the name of Northern Ireland.

“This ruling, along with his refusal of my request to raise in the Assembly this morning the hurt caused by the appointment of the DCAL Special Advisor, suggests a pattern from which we can all draw our own conclusions.”
