Full restoration project for Arthur’s Cottage now essential - Allister

28 May 2011

Commenting on the extensive fire damage to Arthur’s Cottage in Cullybackey, local MLA and TUV Leader Jim Allister described it as ‘a cruel blow not just in terms of the damage to the iconic historical building but also to an important tourist attraction, which is central to the Ulster/Scots history of America.’

Mr Allister said there are three Stormont departments which should be interested in helping the now essential restoration project and he would be pressing them all for co-ordinated action: DETI, with its responsibilities for tourism, DOE from the perspective of historic and listed buildings and DCAL, with its cultural obligations. “All must pull their weight in ensuring full restoration. Such restoration must now become the essential focus”, said the MLA.
