Cold House for Protestants

20 May 2011

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister MLA:-

“Indications that DUP/Sinn Fein appointed Attorney General, John Larkin QC, is about to choose Barra McGrory – previously Martin McGuinness’ solicitor of choice - as the new head of the Public Prosecution Service, provide an insight into the outworking of the devolution of policing and justice.

“There are three high profile legal appointments in Northern Ireland, Lord Chief Justice, Attorney General and Director of Public Prosecutions. I hear much talk about a ‘shared society’, not least from the Justice Minister. Yet, if these three top posts are filled from one tradition only, it raises uncomfortable issues.

“Thus, earlier this week I tabled this Priority Written Question to the Justice Minister:

"To ask the Minister of Justice for his assessment of the impact on his commitment to a shared future if the posts of Lord Chief Justice, the Attorney General for Northern Ireland and the Director of Public Prosecutions are held by people exclusively from one tradition."
