Allister comments on Queen's visit to Dublin

19 May 2011

Statement by TUV leader Jim Allister QC MLA:

“While Her Majesty the Queen was more than magnanimous in what she said yesterday the same cannot be said of Mary McAleese’s speech.

“Mrs McAleese could have commented on the tragic legacy left by Republican terrorists and the role her state played in funding and harbouring them. Instead she talked about her pride in the Republic’s struggle for independence. Mrs McAleese could have thanked the United Kingdom for bailing out her bankrupt Republic and remarked upon the multibillion pound cost of the same to British taxpayers. Instead she chose to talk about the “colonisers and the colonised”, playing in to the perennial Irish mentality of victimhood.

“It is deeply regrettable that Her Majesty the Queen has been used politically  in order to make misguided points about the “peace process” during her visit by attending the Garden of Remembrance and other sites in Republican folklore.”
