Extract from a speech in European Parliament in Strasbourg by DUP MEP, JIM ALLISTER
I congratulate the people of France and Holland on bringing deliverance to all in Europe who value democracy and national liberty. The situation which now exists challenges the democratic credentials of the EU leaders. You set the test for survival of the Constitution, namely ratification by all 25. You lost. It is time to face up to it and bury the corpse that was the EU Constitution. Your attempts to resuscitate it are as distasteful as they are ill-fated.
Instead, however, of an honest acceptance, I detect, rather, that a fraudulent rewriting of the rules is underway. Your excuses don't wash. The question answered in France and Holland was unmistakeably clear - this Constitution is unacceptable.
I must finally comment that it is not the first time Holland has saved Europe from political tyranny. This very week, in the notable year of 1690, William Prince of Orange landed at Carrickfergus in my country and brought us the Glorious Revolution and Williamite Settlement which till this day is the basis of the freedoms which the British nation jealously guards against destruction, whether at the hands of an EU Constitution or otherwise.
