How many more have to die before Stormont acts on A 26

18 March 2011

Joint Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister and Councillor Audrey Patterson:-

“Another tragic death on the Frosses Road underscores the urgency of remedial work to make this death trap road safer. Whereas our first thoughts are with the family of the deceased, we have to ask, how many more motorists have to die, before action is taken by DRD?

“The A26 has one of the highest traffic volumes for a single carriageway road anywhere in Northern Ireland, and significantly higher than the A5. Yet, for the political purpose of building the Dublin/Donegal motorway, Conor Murphy is pouring virtually all his resources, hundreds of millions, into that project, while axing the promised dualling of at least a further section of the A26.

“Those local MLAs (Storey, Frew and McKay) who voted last week for the DUP/Sinn Fein budget, voted to postpone the A26 upgrade, because that is a clear part of DRD’s plans. They let North Antrim down. So, there is no point in them talking in their election literature about upgrading the A26; they choose to vote for postponement. They put the DUP/Sinn Fein whip before the safety and interests of their constituents.”
