The one thing the Republic has which Northern Ireland needs

25 February 2011

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister:-

“Today the voters in the Republic, as in any working democracy, will have the opportunity to change their government. Yet in a few weeks, when Northern Ireland votes, we will be denied that fundamental democratic right, because of the absurdity of mandatory coalition.

“Voters in the Republic can punish and replace their failed government, we are prohibited by law from doing so. Nor, are we even permitted an Opposition. Instead of necessary change we are locked into four more years of failure and deadlock.

“On 5th May voters in Scotland and Wales will be allowed to change their regional government, but not here. This is a shocking indictment not just of the undemocratic system imposed by the Belfast Agreement but of every party which works it.

“While others claim a commitment to change, they lack sincerity. By their actions they continue to operate and perpetuate what they know to be wrong. Only TUV demands change NOW. Change to restore the basic democratic rights of being allowed to change your government, of voting failed parties out and the right to an Opposition. Sadly, what is taken for granted, and will be seen in action in the Republic today, is denied in Northern Ireland.”
