TUV answers Ruane's latest outburst on education

03 February 2011

Statement by TUV Vice-Chairman Keith Harbinson

“Minister Ruane’s venom against selective transfer for children knows no bounds. In the week that those she forced to avail of outside transfer facilities get their results, she launches her latest vindictive attack, as a diversion, no doubt, from the turmoil which her ministerial tyranny has created.

“Instead of having the good grace to wish all the children well and leave it there, she launches into another tirade against the grammar schools. If ever there was a minister unfit for office, it is Catriona Ruane. Yet, tragically, for 4 years she has run amok through our education system, unfettered by those who promised they had devised accountability mechanisms to hold such ministers in check. As with water, so it is with education, there is no accountability in Stormont in respect of failed Sinn Fein ministers. Their divisive writ runs unchallenged.

“The chaos in education alone is enough to demonstrate why Stormont needs drastic overhaul, real accountability and a real Opposition. In May voters will have an opportunity to do something about it, The choice will be between voting for more of the same, by again supporting the old parties that have brought us this dysfunctional government, or voting for the structural and democratic change demanded by TUV to make Stormont work.”
