Comment by TUV Leader Jim Allister on political events in Dublin

24 January 2011

As the Dublin Government is bundled out of office because of a collapse in public confidence, in Northern Ireland the Business Committee of the Assembly won’t even give a slot to debate a Motion of No Confidence in a Minister, Conor Murphy, who has demonstrably lost public confidence. So, for me, the fall of the Dublin Government, in its own way, underscores again the gross democratic deficit here.

“We are the only part of the democratic world where you can neither change your government at elections, vote a party out of government or even get rid of a single minister by a vote of no confidence in the Legislative Assembly. Unless and until this absurd situation is rectified we will not have democratic accountability at Stormont, or its corollary, workable government.”
