Why did Adams meet IRA money launderer before Northern Bank robbery?

15 December 2010

Statement by TUV Vice-chairman Keith Harbinson:

“Following reports in yesterday’s Irish Independent and today’s Irish News it is clear that Sinn Fein/IRA leader Gerry Adams needs to publicly set the record straight on what exactly his relationship was with convicted money-launderer Ted Cunningham.

“It has been reported that prior to the 2004 Northern Bank robbery a Garda surveillance team saw Adams meet Mr Cunningham. Cunningham was later jailed for ten years for laundering the proceeds of the heist.

“Although Sinn Fein/IRA have repeated their questionable denial that Adams had no prior knowledge of the robbery it is telling that there is no denial that a meeting with Cunningham took place.

“So let’s have some clarity from Sinn Fein. Does Adams know Cunningham? What is the nature of their relationship? Did he meet the Northern Bank money-launderer before the robbery? If so, why?

“It is deeply ironic that at a time when a budget is being hammered out which will see everyone in our Province suffer we are reminded of the links which senior Republicans have to multi-million pound crime. Would any other country in the Western world tolerate such a party in government?”
