Scholarship scheme welcome but should be expanded

07 December 2010

TUV leader Jim Allister has welcomed the extension to Northern Ireland of a GB scholarship scheme for children of deceased military personnel but has urged Minister Danny Kennedy to do more.

In a statement Mr Allister said:

“I welcome Mr Kennedy’s announcement that the Coalition Government’s scholarship scheme for the children of service personnel killed on active service will be extended to Northern Ireland. These men and women gave their all for freedom. It is fitting that the suffering of their children should be acknowledged in such a fashion.

“However,  the same logic should cause Minister Kennedy to extend it to the children of police and any other security personnel killed by terrorists in Northern Ireland, and backdated to include those killed in the past where the children are still under third level education age.

“I have written to the Minister to urge him to expand the programme accordingly. I trust a favourable response will be forthcoming.”
