Robinson's Day of Shame

11 November 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister:-

“Irrespective of what he says at tonight’s event, Peter Robinson knows in his heart that he should not on this Remembrance Day be standing alongside the First Minister of Terror to see him sanitised as a ‘man of peace’ through the awarding of the Glencree Peace Award.

“Peter Robinson knows McGuinness is a victim maker, yet tonight, to his shame, he will help laud him as a paragon of peace. Remembrance Day is a very precious occasion for many, not least the thousands of the IRA’s victims, including those made victims in the IRA’s Poppy Day Massacre in Enniskillen, but what will Peter Robinson be doing? Lined up at a €200 a plate gala celebration in Dublin with IRA Commander McGuinness, who from his key Army Council role knows all about such atrocities.

“The spin that he and McGuinness will accept the award not on their own behalf, but on behalf of the whole community, is dishonest nonsense, because those bestowing the joint award have declared that it is personal to each of them, in recognition of their own specific roles. So Peter Robinson knows, just as he knows that he specially selected 11th November as a suitable date, that this award expressly honours McGuinness, the man he once dubbed ‘the Bogside Butcher’.

“Though the DUP has remained mute on this embarrassing issue, I do have to ask where are the voices of those who proclaim adherence to morality in politics. By their silence, David Simpson, William McCrea, Gregory Campbell and others give their approval to this obscene spectacle.”
