Public patience with paramilitaries exhausted - Allister

10 November 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister:

“It is not trite excuses about needing time and help that the public whom they terrorise needs to hear from UVF/PUP, but action to end paramilitary rule. The only time the murderers of Bobby Moffett need are the life sentences which should flow from their heinous crime. As for the PUP, they would be better employed urging and delivering the full co-operation necessary to take these killers off the streets.

“Talking, again, about paramilitaries needing time and help is just excuse-making, and maybe even the seeking of pay off, again, for doing the right thing. If murder is wrong, and it most assuredly is, if orchestrating rioting is wrong, and it most assuredly is, then who but those who justify and cling to such criminality would think the perpetrators need help or even reward to stop, instead of the justice that they deserve?

“The moral authority of many politicians in calling on the UVF to do the decent thing is dissipated because they, at Stormont, are a party to the manifestation that violence paid for IRA/Sinn Fein, with the reward and promotion to the highest office in the land being the buy-off for their murderous terror. But those of us who still oppose such political and moral error can and do say that there can and should be no role, or reward, for any paramilitary organisation.”
