No surprise in Sinn Fein putting a language strategy before a jobs strategy

08 November 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister

"It says everything one needs to know about Sinn Fein that with the economy going to wreck and ruin they are more interested today in the Assembly in demanding more waste on an Irish Language strategy. We need a jobs strategy, not a language strategy.

"Sadly, however, the DUP did foolishly agree, through the NI St Andrews Agreement Act 2006 to an Irish Language strategy, with the NI Act 1998 being amended to include S 28D:

"(1) The Executive Committee shall adopt a strategy setting out how it proposes to enhance and protect the development of the Irish language."

Thereby, they handed Sinn Fein the means to keep promoting their destructive and wasteful language agenda.

"The Assembly and Executive have wasted too much already on needless promotion of and translation to Irish. Instead of looking to waste more on such follies they should be cutting back and retrenching."
