Call for compensation for Fermanagh Eel Fishermen

06 November 2010

Statement by TUV Leader Jim Allister:-

"I am concerned to note that though DCAL was very quick to close down the Lough Erne Eel Fishery, it has been extremely tardy in putting together a compensation package for the eel fishermen whose livelihoods it destroyed.

"I have, therefore, been in touch with the DCAL Minister enquiring why he has so neglected the Lough Erne eel fishermen and when they can expect some semblance of justice arising from his precipitive and draconian closure of the fishery. This fishery did not need to close, the option existed within the EU regulation for a 50% reduction in fishing effort, but instead DCAL opted for overnight, not even phased, closure, and that without even a proper consultation process.

"The manner in which the Lough Erne eel fishermen were treated was disgraceful. The least DCAL can now do is put in place an adequate compensation regime."
