Call for SDLP to clarify position on PMS

03 November 2010

TUV Leader Jim Allister and long-term supporter of the PMS savers has called on the SDLP to clarify its position following a negative statement from its Finance spokesman, Declan O’Loan. http://www.sdlp.ie/index.php/newsroom_media/newsarticle/oloan_concern_over_proposed_solution_for_pms_savers/

Mr O’Loan questioned if the Executive should be putting up £25m and drawing down £175m in loans, centrepieces of the current rescue plan.

Commenting Jim Allister said, “Considering the strong support offered to PMS savers by Mark Durkan and others, this statement from Mr O’Loan requires the SDLP to clarify its position. Is it now backing away from supporting a rescue package? The package may not be all it might have been but it should not be undermined by seeking to pull the Stormont rug from under it. I trust we are not beginning to witness the playing of politics with this issue and the SDLP, for electoral reasons, hoping to position itself on different ground from Sinn Fein, who, as I understand it, has not yet committed to the current package.

“Mischief making on this issue is the last thing the hard-pressed PMS savers need, so I trust the SDLP leadership will waste no time in offering clarification and reassurance.”
